A "connector" consists of both sides of a detachable connection, i.e. a female (socket) and a male (plug) contact. A connection between cable and component requires particular care because it has to be
- electrically conductive (data transfer),
- mechanically stable
- insensitive to corrosion and
- suitable for repeated insertion and withdrawal.
Depending on the type of connector, priority is given to electrical conductivity in sockets or to spring characteristics in plugs. The surfaces are plated wherever contact or corrosion resistance are of importance.
Strip, wire or rods are used as pre-material for connectors. The choice is dependent on the size and design of the connector.
