Electroplated strip

In addition to hot-dip tinned strip, Wieland offers strip which is electroplated with both tin and nickel on a state-of-the-art strip electroplating line. This line allows the production of a large number of coating types meeting very high standards in terms of function and appearance.

Product range

Large view Wieland-SnEP

Wieland-SnEP

consists of matt, electroplated tin (EP = electroplated). If requested, the strip can be covered with intermediate layers, for example with nickel, to reduce the risk of whisker formation.

Large view Wieland-SnEPR

Wieland-SnEPR

is a matt, electroplated tin. After electroplating, the strip is subjected to a thermal (reflow) treatment during which the tin is remelted (EPR = electroplated reflow). This results in the formation of intermetallic phases at the interface between coating and base material. The tin coating becomes bright without the need to use organic brighteners. A reflow treatment reduces internal stresses in the tin coating which makes Wieland-SnEPR far less susceptible to whisker formation than untreated electroplated tin coatings.

In thin coatings, the hard intermetallic phases lead to a higher microhardness and consequently a lower friction coefficient as well as lower insertion and withdrawal forces of connectors. The wearing out of the coating after frequent insertion is less probable than with matt pure tin. An intermediate layer of copper or nickel can further improve the properties.

Large view Wieland-NiEP

Wieland-NiEP

consists of matt nickel. Nickel serves ascorrosion protection but its suitability for electrical contacts is only limited. The advantages are good temperature and abrasion resistance.

Large view Wieland-SnPFT

Wieland-SnPFT

is a special quality for press-fit technology (PFT). It consists of a thin, matt tin coating on a nickel undercoat. The small overall thickness of less than 1.4 μm minimises susceptibility to pressure whisker formation.
